World financial markets reeled and stunned lawmakers groped for their next move Monday after the House failed to approve a $700 billion bailout of the financial services industry.
Hell ya they all want part of the money
Obama and the Dems are putting politics ahead of the country...?
It was the GOP deserters who tipped the scales.
I dont care which side flipped the scales ...............Way TO Go on the NO votes!!!
People need to stop watching the msnbc news channel, they are showing way to much of that bald guy Palmer, ranting and raving how the world as we know it is coming to a catastrophic end due to the credit freeze. PANIC PANIC MAKE THE PEOPLE PANIC SPREAD THE FEAR!
I find that very hard to believe. In fact just to see if this was the case I applied online for one of the many credit card applications that come in the mail daily....Go Figure approved in 30 seconds.
Wall Street does not deserve a Bailout. Let the rotten companies take a dive along with their CEO's. The honest companies will move forward and thrive. The Wall Street market should not run our lives with their buying and selling frenzies. Every gambler knows their lucky streak can't last forever. Wall Street is a GIANT Casino gambling with peoples livelyhood and stuffing the profits in their own pockets!
Go listen to some positive info regarding the bailout being voted out.
I'm sorry that I can't cut & paste but go to google "cspan fannie 2004". You will see actual footage of a meeting that the democrats were warned about this mess and they called the republicans and the investigators liars.
If you see this 8 1/2 minute video I don't see how you can say that this is not a democrat problem. Barney Frank should not be anywhere near these negotiations.
Yes, the dems have put politics ahead of country for the past eight years. Partisanship has to stop.
Relax guys. It's not as bad as these people are making you think. Settle down the markets always do.
The dems caused it. The dems are now crying foul at the Republicans. Some manipulation huh!
What scales, they used an elephant dung shovel to cram this down our throat. This is just not right; I do not want $700 b worth of bad notes. Bring back mfg to the US that is the way to fix this.
Don't the Democrats control the majority in the House? Unlike in some sessions when the minority party can prevent votes, this was an actual vote. If all Democrats had voted for the bill and all Republicans had voted against, the bill would have passed. Instead, some Democrats and a lot of Republicans voted against it? It's the Republicans' fault? Don't believe everything you read. Use some common sense.
Lastly, since when is it a bad thing when a group of people vote against a bill because they believe it's bad for the country or even better because their constituents don't like it?
Oh, their tactic worked! People are now blaming the 'Dems'. Gosh, I'm shocked that the Reps would pull another political ploy!
Seriously, I was for the Republican's plan until I found out their plan hinges on lowering the Capital Gains tax further (it is now at 15%--that is less than our state tax). Since Obama plans on raising it, they just want to put something into play to keep him from doing that. Their plan also tacks on a lot of other stuff that has NOTHING to do with the Bail Out.
I don't want to see the bail out go through, but I'd like to see Congress start voting on a bill all by itself instead of tacking on un-related stuff and then wonder why they don't get anything done!
Hell, I'd like to see Congress put out 3 page bills and have 'the people' vote instead of them.
'Representatives', they are not representing us.
Lisa,
"Hell, I'd like to see Congress put out 3 page bills and have 'the people' vote instead of them.
"Representative's, they are not representing us."
Actually in this one, sole case I think you're wrong because, I do believe they just did. 90% of people emailed and called them and told them they did NOT want this bailout and... it didn't happen.
didn't happen yet you mean
Actually, I mean exactly what I said. We told them we didn't want this bailout and most of them voted: "No."
How's that not going along with what we wanted?
Thank God for the GOP. It's about time they start acting the way their constituents want them to.
OK boys and girls in the Congress- time to get some balls and vot e for this bail out before we're all standing in bread lines. I am not for this bail out, I despise that it is necessary - but necessary it is.
I could not help but notice that McCain couldn't convince one member in either party in his home state to vote for this bill - well so much for his leadership skills - but then I already knew that! Yess siree bob - you can not know how comforted I am that he put his campaign on hold to scurry off to Washington and save us all!
Get smart America - Obama/Biden!
well tex58 we all are getting smarter by not voting for Obama.
Umm...because Obama rallied his party? I think several Democrats held out, also.
time to get some balls and vote for this bail out before we're all standing in bread lines.
Bread lines are better then selling the soul of our nation..
Bring the G....D....Jobs back to the US and stop this stock dancing with our future...there is no way to compete with wages in other counties so we all know why they all want to be there. Profits form the products..Profots for the stocks...Profits for selling the stock... and on and on and on.....
I am really !@#$#@ Pissed....Both Dems and Rep. did what was ask of them by the people
and a moron like you wants to still make sides. Who gives a rats a...If there are no jobs left to buy the sh...none of it is going to make a difference.....
I'm with you Tex!!! I did the same thing and checked the AZ vote. Makes one of two things apparent: Either McCain is not in favor of rescuing the American economy (although I believe he's led us to believe he is...mmmm) or... he's not able to lead his party. Either way that's a hugely important thing to consider for those of you who need a falling brick on your head to get it.
Back to the reason I checked the vote call in the first place. I want a record, for posterity, of everyone who is against rescuing our economy, not to say we'll be able to afford even the paper to record it.
For all of those who incorrectly see this as a bailout plan, and not a plan to rescue the American economy and that means a rescue for EACH and EVERY one of us, for our way of life...all I can say is that you best not owe a dime in credit else you are living in a glass house and throwing stones. This was caused by the desire to own more than we could afford and make money. Oh, and the failure to rescue our economy will affect each and every one of use including those of us who managed our finances responsibly.
Here's to rice and beans forever... and for those who haven't seen that yet...let's talk later this week. I don't think I'll need to wait longer than that to say I told you so.
I am votiing against all who voted for the Bailout. I dont care if they are Dem or Rep.
I was actually shocked by who all voted against it. I mean, I'll admit it, I was willing to bite the bullet on this one until I noticed that every single name that I have reluctantly come to respect voted: "No." Granted that's not a LOT of names (it never is) but they all seemed to agree so, for MY part, this tells me that there's gotta be a better way. Yes, something has to be done, almost everyone seems to agree on that much, but this obviously ain't it.
Remember ------ The dems could have passed this without a single Republican vote!!!!!!! They are the majority.
THe republicans are what? Babies?
THe speaker of the house speaks the truth and you all take it to heart.
Fact or Lie - THe republicans squandered a budget surplus.
Face the facts REpublicans!
Check the facts, Change! Your candidate is in the pocket of Acorn, fannie, freddie, lehman's and wall street! You think you'll see change? Yes, with less money in your pocket and more in the governments...and who will be living in a mansion? Not you, believe me.
We should all just do what McCain did. Dump our wives (even if they are ill) and find a rich plastic wife!
its great to see reps doing what the people ask them to do and as far as the market goes it will hurt for a while but it always has a way of settling down and getting back to normal.
Oh yeah.
Who said McCain told them to pass it. Maybe he didn't .Maybe they voted the he wanted them to vote.
I'm with you Bailey. I checked the AZ vote and not a single Yea. Makes one of two things apparent: Either McCain is not in favor of rescuing the American economy (although I believe he's led us to believe he is...mmmm) or... he's not able to lead his party. Either way that's a hugely important thing to consider for those of you who need a falling brick on your head to get it.

W-451275, Maybe McCain sees it as the failure of a plan that it is. If the Dem's wanted it so bad they could have done it themselves. They have over 95% of the votes needed alone without the republicans. Pelosi was so sure it would pass, she didn't even do her job as speaker and make sure before they voted. Now she's trying to blame the republicans? My hats off to the democrats who voted no because they actually saw what a bailout for the rich this was. Her and Bush and Reid all have major friends on wall street. You think any one of the three were thinking about us? Remember, McCain was the one who wanted to step back and make sure this was worth voting for. Obviously it wasn't . I think we need to evaluate who is watching our back and who isn't. It's very apparent it is not Bush, Pelosi or Reid. By the way , if you want Obama's input, Just call him, he says he will be there! LOL!!!!!!!!!
First off McCain wanted them to vote "Yes" he was bragging about rallying the party around this bill today.
And, I agree that something needs to be done, but this bailout in particular?
Hmmm.... I'm in Arizona and one of my reps is up there whom I actually voted for and support. And I have yet to see Giffords do anything I haven't agreed with so far (once I found out the full story and did a little digging at anyrate). I'll grant that she's still a little wet behind the ears (one of the reasons why I like her- too new to be jaded yet) but she's not stupid (at least not so far IMHO), so this tells me that there's something seriously wrong with this particular bill.
Beyond that, she's not the only one either. Every single name I've developed a bit of respect for while watching the news is in the "No" category also and, that sends a red flag up for me.
they cant even decide which to wipe their #*#
I oppose the proposed bailout plan because it's a lousy plan. It will not help main street or our economy or our financial systems in the mid-term or long-term. It is a panic bill, wilder than the emotions on Wall Street. Get educated, e.g., on rgemonitor.com -- which all involved should have done weeks ago before dragging us all through this mess.
I've been reading a few stories the past 10 minutes, It seems the Fed Bank just gave up 620 billion to help world banks, The Slime on wall st feel that they deserve our welfare, and every body is blaming nancy because she actually said somthing close to the truth, And look europe is bailing out there own banks so we dont have too and OMG oil is back where it should be falling in value. so maybe giving up 700 points is a good thing. Let WALL STREET BURNNNNNNNN
Tonight many financial disaster victims will need to just sit and be with the issues of their pain and loss. There is nothing that can be done but to be visited by the sorrow and disillusionment.
Today the country and many parts of the world are seeing the liter of hopes, dreams and hard work. Today many lost more than dollars and bank accounts. Today for many with the failed bailout on Capitol hill they have lost hope in the financial markets, government and leadership.

Well, the Republicans had a majority in Congress and a President in the White House. Blaming the Democrats isn't going to work
Blaming the Republicans isn't the answer, either.During the Clinton years, these subprime loans were entusiastically promoted, and the economy looked good, just look at all the first time homeowners! Oh, whoops, they really weren't qualified for those loans, I guess...Obama has recieved money from Freddie, Fannie, and Lehman's, and Wall Street (money that apparently they didn't really have) - perhaps he could demonstrate his patriotism by returning it and thus decreasing the $700 billion dollar debt he thinks its a good idea to saddle the taxpayer with - with little oversight of Secretary Paulson's actions...the house has had a majority of Democrats and chose to ignore this little problem, in spite of admonitions from President Bush and John McCain (who also supports this dangerous bit of expensive legislation)...I believe some politicians are just trying to get their hands on some more "handouts," an astute skill honed by years in congress..time for term limits, no more than 2 per crook. It is both parties' problem, and they are trying to pass it off on us. Certainly the free market needs a little more oversight, but let's get out of the way, tighten our spending habits, and let it correct itself. No bailout for these losers.
Redburn - Do you think for one minute that back in 2004 the republicans could have reversed this without democrat support? If they would of even tried they would have been called everything in the book by Cnn, MSNBC, New York Time, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek. etc.
When the democrats took over in 2006 they said they were going to fix things. What a joke! They had their chance. I'd rather go back to GOP control.
Their partisanship has cost this country plenty. It's time to stop. Get rid of Pelosi now. And Barney Frank should be nowhere near any negotiations at this time.
My sincere congratulations and respect to all of the representatives - Republican and Democrat - who heard the voices of their constituents and voted "no" on this horrific bill. These individuals did not "go along with the party" even though the party leaders all think they know what is best for all those silly individuals out there who cling to their guns and their religion...the congressmen and women who voted "no" voted for a free market America. Bernanke, Frank, Paulson, Dodd...time to step down. It came to a head on your watch, and you are the "experts." And it is about time congress listened to the voters, instead of following party lead, either party lead, like pathetic sheep. No bailout for these crooks. They deserve to lose their fortunes and their jobs. The market will self correct, and we will be better off for being unable to get credit for a period of time.
Good reminder that we the people run this country and they can't pull the wool over our eyes all the time. I love how "shocked" they all are.
I love how the citizens are standing up and saying "no!" Congratulations to all of us who figured out that we are the government. And to all of those congressmen and congress women who are courageous enough to hear our voices, and vote accordingly. I don't believe for one minute that any of those people who are pushing the legislation have our best interests at heart. And if this bill makes it through, it will just delay inevitable pain...
In the movie" Thief", James Cann's character is told by his mob boss that essentially every aspect of his life is controlled by him, and that he will work for him until he is used up and burned out. Cann's character responds by killing the mob boss, his cronies and blows up his house and torches his cars. I think that is where we are at as a nation, Wall Street's the mob boss and we are all Jimmy Cann. As Americans, when we are blackmailed into a corner we say "F" it and are willing to sacrifice all we have to get revenge. (Remember flight 93). We don't like being told "your my b***h.
The House GOP has decided that they would rather see the global economy collapse than let any Democrats get credit for bringing a solution to the floor. Pretty pathetic and petty...so much for "Country First".
In addition, McCain (through his people) grandstanded about how he brought everyone together and supported the final proposal, and it is his party that backed away at the last minute. What does that say about his leadership abilities--if he cannot rally his own party in a time of crisis to agree on a critical position that he claimed to support, how is he expected to bring the nation together after taking office?
Apparently 90+ democrats felt the same way as the republicans. I guess the bill wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. If the bill was so wonderful and was going to give the dems so much credit and be such a terrific solution, I think all the dems would have signed on without worrying about whether the repubs liked it or not.
Well, plenty of Democrats were willing to also take that unpopular (with congressional leaders) stand, to honor their commitment to their constituents. I applaud them and the Republicans who defied party leaders, to respect the wishes of the voters. These are the true leaders in congress, and they are the true representatives of our country. May they stand strong.
I'm with you Science Guy. I checked the AZ vote. Not a single YES. Today was a great day in democracy of which we have not seen in a long time. We the people for the people and we prevailed amongst all the greed and bull. Congress finally voted as they should for us because that was what they heard from the people. I could tell you numerous places to look at all the democrats who had a hand in this but all the sites were taken down. More of Obama's truth squads I am sure. Keeping democracy down. Only socialist countries make a mockery of freedom of speech.
Well stated.
Last I checked the Dems have 235 seats in the house. That's far in excess of the votes needed to pass this bill.
Sounds to me that the dems need new leadership in the house to replace the ineffective two clowns they have now. Watching Pelosi and Frank try to blame the Republicans for democrat ineptitude was absolutely priceless. Almost as funny as that rabble of media idiots hanging on their every word..
Yep, go for it Democrats!!You can do it...you don't need those lame Republicans...
Pelosi was dead wrong -- whether her statements are true or false -- in making such a blatantly partisan and poisonous speech in the middle of an AMERICAN crisis. To play the blame game when everyone is trying to work out a solution is like football players bamimg each other during the game when they are trying to come back in the fourth quarter. There is plenty of time for thatt later.
Just another day in the Pelosi house...and you are correct. Keeping her front and center will cost the Democrats...
